REPO! The Goth Opera?
March 23rd, 2009 Posted in Movies, MusicA friend brought this ove this weekend. I have to admit I had not heard of it.
The real name is “Repo! The Genetic Opera” and it is a musical, a rock opera (with it’s own website and a trailer). A dark and bloody musical. I really thought I would not enjoy this, and while as in all musicals, some of the scenes seems to be forced as far as singing versus just a few lines of dialog (and it had Paris Hilton in it, but not enough to ruin it) it was rather entertaining. Oh, and this was a musical, a play off Broadway I guess.
The idea behind this is not new, exactly. In the future you can buy replacement body parts from GeneCo. If you can’t afford it, and no one can, you finance it. If you don’t pay, they have permitted body part repossession. So one guy gets to go about and be a legal assassin. Taking the body part you own on. Mostly they show hearts, but the spine, with the bar-code on the end was entertaining. Yes it, bloody, and only slightly gory. Ok not really so much gory.
It has the recent Comic Book feel in that it has back stories and cut scenes in the comic book style. I liked it, but it seems almost over done as of late with all the comic book stories out as of late. It is also an addiction movie. A “Scalpel Slut” in the movie is someone who is addicted to plastic surgery and the new drug which makes it more manageable from a pain aspect.
Interesting cast, as I mentioned Paris Hilton is in it. Luckily not enough to ruin it. Other than that we have Alexa Vega who has done several Nickelodean movies and was on Hair Spay on Broadway. Paul Sorvino is the owner of GeneCo and the Villain. Anthony Head plays Repo, and you’ll recognize him from TV as he has been in numerous shows including Buffy. Sarah Brightman plays Blind Meg, which introduces an interesting idea that you can record what you see and even project 3D holograms, just watch the movie to get that. Bill Moseley plays one of the psychotic sons of Sorvino’s character, and Paris Hilton’s brother. Moseley has played in quite a few horor flicks… B rate movies we all love. Anyway, the cast fit it well. And they actually sang all their own parts.
The Music was really good. It has some good names in it, including my favorite Daniel Ash. The music was mainly hard goth style mucis, with a little punk thrown in. It has some very catchy pieces including Seventeen and Zydrate Anatomy.
Anyway, it is not often I review movies, but this one was unique and well worth watching at least once. I’ll but it on BlueRay and probably pick up the soundtrack as I just found it mesmorizing. You’ll love it or you’ll loathe it. I don’t expect much in-between.
Now I want to come up with the Repo costume for Halloween now.
