Nmap Network Scanning

December 4th, 2008 Posted in Computers, Intarweb, Unspecific

Nmap Network Scanning is the official guide to the Nmap Security Scanner, a free and open source utility used by millions of people for network discovery, administration, and security auditing. From explaining port scanning basics for novices to detailing low-level packet crafting methods used by advanced hackers, this book suits all levels of security and networking professionals.”

Yes it is finally out.  I have been touting this among my friends for years now.  And while my name does not appear in the acknowledgments, I did contribute several items to this book.  In Chapter 1 I wrote a story about my time at Yahoo called “MadHat in Wonderland” covering some tools I wrote that I host here.  It is also referenced in Chapter 11.  I also contributed to chapter 13 on the nmap grepable output, which was partly taken from the paper I wrote on the subject.

Anyway, it has shown up on Amazon, at full price.  Fyodor has sent copies out to reviewers and it should be hitting other places soon.  The official release date appears to be January 1, 2009.  If you use nmap, it is worth getting.  Lots of good informaiton and I highly recommend it.

UPDATE:

Fyodor emailed me and said that leaving me out of the acknowledgments was just an oversight and I should have brought it up.  I really didn’t even think about it until the book was going to the publisher.  My bad. I should show up on the online edition and when the second edition of the book comes out.
